This is a basic list of classes I’ve taught at SCA and other events since 2010. If you see something you are interested in, please email me at kaousuu (at) gmail.com and I will be happy to forward whatever information I have your way. I do work off of outlines as handouts more than pages and pages of information to engage the class more (and to stop people from just asking for handouts and leaving, thus shorting my class of materials.) so your best bet would be either to attend one of my classes, or engage in an email dialogue with me. Heck, if you need to call me, I’m sure we can arrange that as well.

Hello Anna,
I am looking for a look of tsitzakion that was introduced to Byzantium by the Khazar and was esp.ly famous during Basilissa Chichek’s /Irene’s times? How did it look like?
Thanks
Gunay

Hi Gunay,
We actually don’t know. We see the term used in the Book of Cerimonies, but there is no pictorial evidence, or a written description, of the garment. All we know is that it was copied from Tzizak’s wedding robes, and then became the height of men’s fashion for a short period of time in the 10th century.
Timothy Dawson gives it only a small paragraph in “By the Emperor’s Hand”, on page 40, where he states by process of elimination, that it may have been a type of headgear, but he’s totally unsure. There is just no description anywhere between Byzantium and Khazaria. If anybody would have done the digging to find an answer or an image, he would have. Lynda Garland just brings up the correlation between the empress’ original Khazar name and the name of the garment. Maria Parani omits it entirely in her “Reconstructing the Reality of Images”, which is a large study of imperial and aristocratic court dress.
I wish I could be of more help, but unfortunately, this is one of those “mystery” garments that comes up from time to time. We have an elaborate name, but nothing more to work from.
Have a great weekend.
